The US isn’t a Great Example

(Abstract)

In human history, relationship between a big country and its neighbors is always an important issue for both sides. There are numerous cases of peaceful coexistence, long-lasting hostility or short-term military confrontation.

In the past several decades, China, its neighbors and the rest of the world have all witnessed a swift rise of its power and influence on world affairs. As a result, how to look at the bilateral ties between China and its neighbors has become a topic of interest for both the academics, policy-makers, media and even the public.

In the process of discussing this topic, some people suggest that China can learn from the United States in dealing with the neighbors, implying that the U.S. is a good example for China in this regard.

Not a very productive and meaningful suggestion

On the surface, this kind of suggestion is logical as both China and the U.S. are powerful and they all have neighbors. In reality, however, it is not a very productive and meaningful suggestion.
